Pionjar and Cobra Drill Repairs

Overview
The Pionjar and Cobra series of drills were manufactured by Berema in Sweden and distributed in North America by Atlas Copco. We service the following models:

  • Atlas Copco Cobra Combi Drills
  • Pionjar 120/130/140 Drills and Breakers

These drills have been the mainstay of backcountry and trail blasting for over 50 years. Unfortunately, they can be temperamental and require maintenance that typical small-engine shops are not equipped to provide. If you have one of these units, please contact us for information on parts and repairs.

Some common Cobra and Pionjar problems include:
1. Difficulty starting or staying running
2. Machines that will start but don’t hit with any force.
3.Drill steels jamming up due to excessive chuck wear

Our experience has been that these machines typically fall into two categories:
1. Used very hard and no longer have adequate compression to do work
2. Lightly used, but stored in a damp shed and seized up due to corrosion.

Quick Tips on Starting

1. Be sure to use the correct mixture of fuel to oil. Older Pionjars with a cast iron cylinder require a 12:1 mix. Newer Cobra Combi units use standard 50:1 fuel.
2. Fill the tank up completely. They can have trouble drawing from a nearly-empty tank.
3. Pionjar units are easier to start if you squirt some fuel into the passage next to the air filter area first.
4. All of these units run badly until they are fully warmed up. You will need to adjust the controls carefully for the first 2-5 minutes of operation.
5. They are easy to flood, especially if you set them down. Try giving it a few pulls with air closed to clear.
